About our Campaign
Thank you, OLS-North!
In April 2019 the Government of Ontario announced as part of the 2019-2020 Provincial Budget that operating funding for Ontario Library Service - North and the Southern Ontario Library Service would be cut by 50%. This decision was a surprise to Northern libraries as no consultation had taken place to understand how these cuts would impact Northern libraries.
As a result of these cuts nearly half of the staff at OLS-North have been laid off. Six full time positions are being eliminated, and two others have been reduced to part time.
The positions that will be lost provided direct support to Northern Libraries in areas including: staff and board training, services to First Nations Libraries, technology consulting, policy and strategic planning consulting, website development for small libraries, the administration of joint purchasing agreements, and support for the Joint Automation Server Initiative (JASI) program, which provides essential library software to 133 rural and Northern library systems across Ontario.
Since the budget announcement libraries across Northern Ontario have been fighting against what we see as a disproportionate and unfair impact to library services in the North.
Due to the vast geographic distances between our libraries, and the significant number of small and rural libraries in the North, we rely on Ontario Library Service - North to connect our libraries and provide professional support to those libraries without access to a professional librarian. As a result of these cuts, libraries in Northern Ontario will lose access to professional consulting and technology services and support that we depend on.
We are calling on the Government of Ontario to reverse cuts to the Ontario Library Service, restore valuable jobs in Northern Ontario, and undertake direct consultation with Northern libraries.
At Ontario Library Service - North they say “It Takes a Library to Raise a Community.” Thank you, OLS-North for being a part of so many communities across Northern Ontario!
